Corporate Health/Safety Director (Indianapolis)

Primary Purpose Leads, develops and directs the health and safety programs of the company. Oversees conformance with federal, state and local occupational safety regulations and company policies. Leads in the achievement of improved safety performance in conjunction with company management. Promotes a strong behavior-based safety culture throughout the organization using proactive means in accordance with the company’s core values and safety principles. Functions And Responsibilities

  • Ensures Health & Safety is the number one goal by developing, maintaining and following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner at all times.
  • Works closely with Leadership to cultivate the Heritage Safety Culture. Interface and coordinate with the Executive Safety Committee.
  • Provides health and safety leadership and direction to Business, Location, and Department Managers.
  • Establish and facilitate company-wide health and safety initiatives throughout the organization, keeping programs fresh.
  • Build and maintain behavior-based safety culture through communications, employee involvement & ownership, and action taken.
  • Implement and maintain safety leadership training to improve overall execution.
  • Attend meetings with key customers regarding safety programs, investigations or incidents. Serve as the corporate health and safety matter expert with clients, regulators, and Heritage staff working on projects or responses.
  • Manage health and safety resources and related department budgets including supervising corporate safety staff. When necessary plan, request and assist in the hiring of new employees. Work within the Heritage framework to foster the career growth of direct reports and other safety professionals within the company.
  • Lead efforts to continuously improve training content and management.
  • Develop and/or maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and safety best practices. Within the company promote the sharing of best practice, learning, and internal benchmarking. Keep up to date on new development, industry trends, and innovative solutions. Take necessary action proactively to improve and modernize the Heritage’s practices.
  • Monitor, maintain, and improve safety management system. Ensure uniform use by locations. Track KPI’s focusing on leading indicators to drive improved safety performance.
  • Audit locations to ensure conformance with health and safety requirements and corporate policies.
  • Identify corrective and preventive action needs through audits, incident investigations, and observation / near miss data trending.
  • Provide corporate assistance in controlling losses from injuries, liabilities, and property losses.
  • Coordinate efforts with occupational medical facilities to ensure treatment protocols and return to work programs are established and followed.
  • Guide and support medical surveillance activities, annual physical programs, and industrial hygiene monitoring surveys.
  • Represent the company with OSHA and other regulatory officials regarding inspections and investigations.
  • Work as the internal incident manager, ensuring that safety managers and injuries are properly managed.
  • Familiar with root cause analysis techniques, risk assessment and management, auditing, management systems, and training.

Education: Four-year college degree required in Health and Safety Management, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with corporate safety work experience; CSP preferred.

Experience: Eight to ten years’ experience working in health and safety for a chemical-based manufacturing or waste treatment organization required. Strong abilities and experience with chemical safety / Process Safety Management required. Four years in a challenging regional, divisional, global or corporate safety experience related to leading and developing safety programs required.

Knowledge and Abilities: This is a safety sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function. Thorough knowledge and understanding of all federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety. Good organization skills. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirator. Strong supervision skills, with proven ability to lead others. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with internal and external customers and to effectively manage and motivate employees and communicate objectives and action plans. Ability to influence, sell, convince, collaborate. Strong project management skills. Strong decision-making skills. Ability to research facts, data and other information from internal and external sources. Strong grammar and writing skills. Basic knowledge of environmental business and/or chemical manufacturing. Strong use of computers and corresponding programs – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other data base programs. Ability to maintain confidential business information. Ability to establish positive relations with internal and external stakeholders. 40-hour HAZWOPER certificate and current annual 8 – hour HAZWOPER refresher, 49 CFR DOT HM-126F certification or willingness to obtain. CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain. Must be willing and able to travel (30 to 50%) Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.
